Backgammon

Backgammon online introduces one of the oldest strategy games in the world as an iOS and Android app. Backgammon is not only difficult, but it is also exciting. Beat opponents around the world with real-life strategy and take your journey from novice to master with this leading board game app.

Graphics

The graphics on the app are colorful, animated 2D which look especially great on new iPhones, iPads and newer models of Google Android devices. However, they are a bit devoid of realism, and there’s nothing too special about the checkers, triangles or dice. The board design isn’t distractive, and the lack of on-screen controls apart from customized prompts helps on-screen play and movement. The score is 8/10.

What Is It About?

Like the typical backgammon exercise, the game begins with one roll of the die, and the player with the highest on-die number moves first. Then comes subsequent moves with each player rolling both dice and moving forward in clockwise or anti-clockwise directions according to the die combinations. If both dice end up on a similar number, the player plays the die combinations twice each. Players forfeit their turns when they roll a combination that makes one or both die moves impossible. The app for Backgammon offers a variety of play options such as multiplayer through their large online community and CPU mode. Both the App Store and Google Play app for Backgammon provides a range of features and new challenges designed to make your game more exciting, even with new updates. You can check your stats and request games with more skilled players. You can also gamble and win in-game money and mega bonuses, although there isn’t any real money offered. The controls are a simple combination of tap-and-play, with the dice using a Random Number Generator to produce their results (debatable!).

The controls are efficient for the ancient game of backgammon which itself doesn’t have too much hand movement, and they also free up any clutter on the screen adding to the playing appeal. They are also quite fluid and responsive. Backgammon offers in-app purchases which you can use to unlock new levels or features. You can swap real dollars for in-game coins which you can use for various actions. Packs include the Starter Pack $4.99, Advanced package $19.99, Premium package for $99.99 and the 12,000 Coins package for $0.99, among others. You can play without these, but you’ll want to make it more interesting at some point. The rate of this point is 9 out of 10.

To Replay Or Not To Replay

I wouldn’t replay this app version for one simple reason. Too many times the opponent beats you unfairly. RNGs should be ‘random’ enough to imitate real-life dice outcomes, especially for small number combinations like those modeled by 6-piece die. This version of Backgammon could be interesting enough if the creators would take time to maintain the unpredictability of their DevOps, especially in opponents playing impossible catch up doubles. The replay value score is low, only 3 out of 10.

Is It Good?

I like the graphics of the game and the ease with which movement on the controls can be made. The latest version connects really fast, and especially if you are going online for multiplayer games. The game is free to get, so that’s a good thing. The in-app purchases will, unfortunately, be inevitable when you are losing. I probably wouldn’t recommend this version of Backgammon to anyone. Your opponents are most likely bots.
