The Battle Chess 3D app for iOS and Google Android brings the classic board game to life by giving the chess pieces human motivation for those who may find the original chess pieces boring. However, the creators added a control pad to this game, making it slightly cumbersome.
I will give a big thumbs up to the graphics. If your regular chess set makes you dreary, this should get your juices running, with 5 different 3D humanoid sets, i.e., Dwarf, Orc, Spartan, Skeleton, and Barbarian. Underneath each humanoid piece is a 2D colored representation of that particular piece. The war animations are also impressive, although they are a bit graphics and come with a PG-rating. The battle is set in a 3D castle, probably what looks like a courtyard arena or a throne room, making the game look amazing on your Android mobile, iPod touch, iPhone or iPad. The score of the graphics is 9/10.
What Is It about?
Battle Chess 3D is regular chess with a twist. The aim remains to capture the opponent’s pieces and ultimately, the opponent’s king. This particular game brings the black and white chess pieces to life through humanoid pieces and also lets them battle instead of just capturing pieces and moving them off the board. The gameplay is similar to regular chess, but this particular game has a D-control pad which is highly inefficient in my view. They should have let the game have regular touch-and-drag finger movements because this makes screens (especially for smaller devices) quite cluttered. You can’t select color pieces, and the default human piece is white. The latest version offers fixes for bugs and an updated D-Pad.
This isn’t an app for all Android devices. The app requires Android 4.0 or higher to run, while the iOS version requires iOS 8.0 or later. The App Store and Google Play apps are both free, and there are no in-app purchases. The score is 9/10.
To Replay or Not to Replay
However much I like the graphics, the AI performance is quite disappointing. For instance, some moves that I tried were blocked, while the AI made blatantly illogical moves. The on-screen controls are definitely not convenient for a mobile chess game. I like the fact that the game offers you a variety of humanoid characters, which should keep it interesting. You also get different difficulty levels which should keep you coming back for more. The developers should think of including different battle scenes or fighting units and tools. Game music should also be well thought out. I’d probably replay the game again if only for the thrill of the graphics. The score is 7/10.
Is It Good?
The graphics on this game will definitely look amazing on your iOS device. The app’s graphics also look great, and everyone will enjoy having this game on their Androids. Battle Chess 3D is the leading humanoid mobile chess game when it comes to graphics. The Android app crashes more frequently than the iOS variant. The AI mechanism is not realistic at times, and some of the moves made were outright cheating.
I’d recommend the game if the developers worked on these issues.
